Millie Piazza

Millie Piazza, Ph.D., is
the Environmental Justice Coordinator at the Washington State Department
of Ecology. She has broad experience in the field of national and
international environmental justice and works
in partnership with people of diverse backgrounds, including indigenous
and low-income populations, and communities of color. Her work
in Washington State includes: serving as lead on design and
implementation of the 1995 Study on Environmental Equity in
Washington State for the Legislature, researching consumption
patterns and health implications of immigrant community subsistence
fishing and harvesting in the Duwamish River, and
conducting home weatherization education to
low-income families for the Blue Mountain Action Council in southeastern
Washington. Millie is currently on the steering committee of the
Collaborative on Health and the Environment - Washington (CHE-WA)
and a member of their environmental justice working group.
Prior to rejoining
Ecology in 2006, Millie worked throughout Micronesia with the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency and completed her doctoral research in
the Republic of Palau. Her environmental work in the Pacific included
training AmeriCorps youths in American Samoa
on environmental justice; working with the Guam Environmental
Protection Agency to facilitate dialogue between community, government,
and business representatives; and assisting the Palau Environmental
Quality Protection Board on environmental education, and community
preparedness and emergency response to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
(SARS).
Millie holds a Ph.D.
from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources &
Environment, a M.E.S from The Evergreen State College in Environmental
Studies, and a B.A. in Sociology from Whitman College.
